I invited myself along to the Edinburgh Sports Club on their very wet Open Day last Sunday and had a lovely time. We played a bit of squash / racketball, got an hour of table tennis coaching, played 10-pin bowling, watched some people doing sports, decided it was too wet to play tennis and enjoyed a freshly barbecued burger (thanks to a large umbrella / sun shade).

Whilst mingling with the Sporty Club of Edinburgh types I learned that ESC had played the final of this year's over-35 cup competition against Tyne. I don't know who was playing or what the individual scores were but Edinburgh Sports Club won. I never even found out what the food and chat was afterwards.

The cup has now been played for 22 times and ESC have won it 11 times. Tyne have won it once, in season 1989 - 90.

I've attached a copy of the completed draws. Well done to everyone for taking part.

Speaking to Simon, he suggested playing it over one weekend next season with a bit of a social thing afterwards. I don't think that my plan to extend the season really worked all that well, or it certainly didn't for Watsonians. Any thoughts? ...... anyone? ...... dance floor murderer? ..... anyone at all?

This year's saga just never seems to end.

The cup is with the engraver and should be ready for the grand prizegiving ceremony at the East's AGM (see http://www.essasquash.co.uk/).

However, despite knowing who won the plate for weeks, possibly even months, there has been no engraving taken place. I have now located the plate (it was actually in a locked trophy cabinet in Myreside despite us never having won it) and now just need to get it engraved with "Abercorn Squash Club and Tennis Club and possibly a few other Sporting Clubs" in the next 10 days or so. This could be tricky.

Now, anyone heard anything from helicoptor man/woman recently?

I'm back now... so you're not on your own here anymore, Richard.

Having sounded out the matter with a few of our opponents, I can concur that your attempts to extend the season did not work well :( Watsonians may as well not have entered it.

Huge Lee's attempts to extend the season on the other side with the East Closed 2008/9 also seem to have not worked well.

So I don't hold out much hope for Simon's idea of running it over a weekend (unless you only want 3 or 4 teams in it). The master's calendar is already crammed full, with a tournament every other week virtually. And the non-tourney people will not give up a weekend when they have family committments etc and will generally favour weeknights.

When I ran the O35 cup(yawn), the most successful years were those when the draw was made out in Oct and the finals were in April.

The main thing is that this competition is not allowed lapse again and on that note, thanks to you Richard for keeping it going and giving us a chance to be outclassed by teams we'd never normally meet!
